I watched Black Mirror because Charlie Brooker wrote it and because I’ve missed Lindsay Duncan on my screen since Rome ended. But, Jesus Christ, talk about bait-and-switch! I read the reviews and saw the promos and I was under the impression that this was a black comedy and political satire. As a political satire it definitely got its point across but it was not comedy by any means.
This was some srs bsns Haneke-style Funny Games shit. Despite the gaping plotholes and utter lack of wit and subtlety, the overall message was loud and clear. The superb acting from Rory Kinnear (and Duncan!) more than made up for the shortcomings of Brooker’s writing. Kinnear plays a believable character within an implausible premise; quite a feat I must say. As a frequent victim of the social media trap, I totally see what Brooker is saying, but it could use a bit more finesse.
