I saw Avatar in 3D today. That is the ticket stub, crinkled because I put it in my front pocket. It was not bad. The story is unbelievably clichéd. The CGI is unbelievably good. Sam Worthington has three facial expressions: in awe of the Na’vi, angry at that crazy ripped old guy, sad. I heard that James Cameron is going to make a sequel. Seriously, though, Mr Cameron, please make a prequel called The Fierce Adventures of Grace and Trudy. I would be a lot more interested.
Also, the score was kind of bad. Okay, just bad.

I would click the link, but once I hovered over it, I saw ‘monocle’ flash out to me. Didn’t click it because I don’t want to see the definitely unaffordable price tag, and then wallow in self-pity due to the fact that I probably will never be able to afford it. Ah, it’s a nice bag.

Based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s “Notes of a Young Doctor”, Alexei Balabanov’s MORPHINE is set in 1917, the year of the Russian revolution, in the clinic of a remote provincial outpost. A sensitive young doctor from Moscow succumbs to the temptation of the title narcotic, dragging a dedicated nurse and lover with him. IMDB

I’ve been wanting to see this for so long but for the life of me I cannot find English subtitles.  :( FOUND. :D IDK why the strikethrough isn’t showing up in my dashboard.  Whatever.

Looks interesting, might download.

Diane Kruger really pulls off that 40s movie star look well. She should do more period films.
Also, there seriously needs to be an alternate history to the already alternate history of Inglourious Basterds where Fräulein Hammersmark and Lt. Hicox hookup.

Anonyma - Eine Frau in Berlin came out in 2008, I wouldn’t have heard of it if I hadn’t read the NYT review during the summer (while being bored at work). Saw it and I am appalled, excluding the rape and wartime violence presented in the film; appalled that Der Baader Meinhof Komplex was selected as Germany’s submission to the Academy for Best Foreign Film in 2008 instead of Anonyma. What the fuck.
Quoting A.O. Scott, because I can never be this eloquent:

But the film hardly treats the fact of Nazi barbarism as justification for what was done to the women of Berlin by soldiers of the Red Army. Nor, however, are the Russians depicted as monsters. Rather, the accomplishment of “A Woman in Berlin” is to tell its story — much as the author of the original diaries did — with a combination of dispassionate clarity and complex human feeling.

I can’t even begin to explain how fabulous this is. I feel like making each one of these little things as plush ornaments and having a basterdized christmas tree next year.

I’ve been seeing these ads for the Olympus Pen camera all over the city and I really quite like them. It’s easy to see that the first one is James Dean with the black turtleneck sweater and broody pout. I thought the second one was Grace Kelly at first glance, until I noticed the Marilyn Monroe SexyFace expression. So who is it? I can’t decide.
